Fair Pay, Fair Contract Overdue for UC Librarians

UC-AFT Unit 17 Librarians decisively rejected UC’s request to extend the current contract, and on October 1, 2018 that contract expired. When bargaining began, the lead negotiator for the UC said UC-AFT Librarians had a “mature contract,” not in need of much change. UC-AFT has spent 6 months detailing exactly how much critical change is needed. To date, UC-AFT Librarians’ Table team has proposed changes to 20 of 34 articles in the contract, and proposed two more addressing academic freedom and sabbatical rights. At best, UC has countered with concessions on minor issues. ALL of these detailed and reasonable proposals have been dismissed. Read more…

Close the Pay Gap: UC Librarian Salaries Lag Behind Peer Institutions

UC Librarian pay scales continue to lag behind their academic librarian peer groups at the California State University (CSU) and “Comparison 8” institutions. At the entry-level point across ranks in the salary schedule, UC librarians experience an average pay gap of 25% behind CSU librarians. When Comparison 8 entry-level salaries are adjusted for the cost of living in California, UC librarians experience an average pay gap of approximately 40% when compared to those campuses. UC Librarians Fight for Respect

UC-AFT librarians continue to fight for respect and much needed academic reforms to their contract, which will expire on September 30. UC Librarians’ contract bargaining heating up

UC librarians will continue to bring on the heat during their fourth contract bargaining meeting with the UC Office of the President at UCLA’s Young Research Library on July 26. A rally in support of UC librarians will be held at noon in front of Young Research Library. Librarians will present new language that addresses increased abuse by UC library administration: in particular, the practice of hiring temporary appointments over potential career librarian positions. UC Librarians’ contract bargaining underway: World class institutions need world class librarians.

UC librarians began contract bargaining April 17, 2018 around proposals related to salary parity, professional activities and academic freedom. Following several strong kickoff actions and 16 months of organizing, librarian chief negotiator, Axel Borg, said “this time librarian bargaining will be unlike anything before.” Read more…
