STEM Collection Strategist
How many years have you been in the profession?
Why did you become a librarian?
I have worked in libraries since I was 17, including 10 years as a library assistant at UCR. I decided that I would like to make a career of working in libraries, so I decided to pursue becoming a professional librarian.
Grievance Steward, Table Team Member
Why is it important to be active in our union?
Being involved in our union and supporting its activities is the only way that we will be able to win a fair contract. Union involvement is also a great way to meet librarians from other campuses.
How are you contributing to this round of bargaining?
I’m on the Table Team
What aspects of working conditions do you want to see improve for your fellow librarians?
Apart from salary improvements to bring UC librarians on par with our CSU and community college counterparts, I would like to see better procedures for dealing with excessive workload.
What book are you reading right now?
The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer (The first book in the trilogy, Annihilation, is a big-time movie now!)
Do you have a favorite sports team?
The Detroit Lions!
Tell us something most people wouldn’t know or guess about you.
Everyone collects something, and my collection is a bit different. I collect patches (sometimes called emblems) from places I’ve visited. My favorite is an emblem from the Apollo XIII Mission – from a museum, I haven’t been to the moon yet. My most recent acquisition is from the Museum of Death in New Orleans: it’s a picture of the Bomber and reads, “Special Delivery.”
