Reference & Instruction Librarian

Areas of Academic Specialty
General Reference; African/African-American Studies
How many years have you been in the profession?
Why did you become a librarian?
There were jobs available and I wanted to stay one more year at UCLA to watch the Bruins win another NCAA basketball title.
Union role
Secretary-Treasurer of UC-AFT; Unit 17 Bargaining Team Member; Former Unit 17 Chief Negotiator
Why is it important to be active in our union?
We need to work together to strengthen our profession and challenge the library administrations that do not always respect us. The union provides a vehicle to do this.
How are you contributing to this round of bargaining?
  • I’m on the Table Team
  • I’m on the Statewide Bargaining Committee
  • I’m organizing & agitating on my local campus
What aspects of working conditions do you want to see improve for your fellow librarians?
Access to telecommuting should be available to all librarians–not subject to the whim of individual supervisors. There should be sufficient funding for librarians to pursue their professional activities without digging into their own funds.
When you’re not fighting for the rights of Unit 17 members, what do you do to unwind?
Work on the Pan African Film & Arts Festival; color mandala designs; bead.
What book are you reading right now?
None–no time.

What is your favorite movie?

Tell us something most people wouldn’t know or guess about you.
That I am addicted to watching Murder, She Wrote every night to put me to sleep.
